Fun Family Holidays in the UK

Children playing in the sand next to the seaPlanning a family holiday? Looking for the best family holiday in the UK which will cater for all ages? Plenty to keep your toddlers occupied, with daily kids clubs, safe, shallow pools and outdoor play equipment and the obligatory kid’s disco. Safe for your older children to wander around the complex with organised games and activities and amusement arcades. Not forgetting the teenagers who will want their own space to chill.

The hope is to have a holiday everyone can enjoy, there’s nothing worse than having your expectations shattered upon arriving at your chosen destination. The promised toddler’s play area is just a plastic swing and a lumpy sand pit. Your tweens and teenagers refuse to go the scheduled activities preferring to skulk in the accommodation attached to their smart phones, and parents are  totally hassled.
Not everyone wants to splurge on long flights and fancy pants family hotels and roasting in the sun, worrying whether it’s actually too hot for the kids and having to watch the pennies because the holiday was so expensive.
With a bit of planning you can create the perfect family getaway, ensuring everybody has a great time – at a reasonable cost. There’s tons of caravan and camping resorts with kids clubs, organised activities and swimming pools dotted all over the UK. If you fancy something a bit more upmarket check out our sections on lovely, family friendly hotels.

‘Are we There Yet’
The holiday starts with the car journey and making this as enjoyable as possible, especially for the younger kids. Here’s where smart phones and children’s tablets are a godsend – make sure they’re fully charged and with a selection of their favourite shows and fun games.
Ispy book for car journeys

    • Pack plenty of snacks and drinks (but not too much sugar).
    • Work out who is sitting where before your journey – THIS IS ESSENTIAL – many car trips are ruined by constant squabbling which started as soon as one kid grabbed the wrong seat.
    • Make regular stops for toilet breaks, to stretch legs and change seats (if necessary).
  • Sticker books, for the younger passengers are a great idea, If you take colouring books and pencils, be prepared to be forever stretching back to rescue them off the floor.
  • Singalongs – well know pop songs or nursery rhymes and make up silly lyrics.
  • Play ‘car’ games. I spy use colours if your children are too young to spell.
  • Make up silly phrases from reg plates passing by. Counting different coloured cars or makes of vehicles can pass a few miles.
  • Start a Story Chain with each passenger, in turn, adding a sentence.
  • Collins Michelin publish a comprehensive list of i-spy books and have several for a long car journey.
